Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 4, 2026

This policy applies to the Lake Champlain Monitor app. We designed the app to work without collecting your personal information.

The short version

Information stored on your device

Your alerts, algae-transition alerts, app settings, and any hazard pins you create are saved only on your device (local storage). This data never leaves your phone, is not transmitted to us or anyone else, and is removed if you delete the app.

Location

If you use the optional hazard-reporting feature, the app may ask for your location to place a map pin at your current position. Your location is used only on your device for that purpose and is never transmitted or stored remotely. You can decline the permission and still use the rest of the app.

Notifications

If you enable alerts, the app schedules local notifications on your device to tell you when your chosen conditions (water level, temperature, or algae status) cross the thresholds you set. These are generated on-device; we do not operate a push server and do not receive a device token or notification data.

Data the app fetches

To show conditions, the app requests public environmental data from government and research sources — either directly or through our caching proxy, which stores only the public data responses (never anything about you). These requests do not include your personal information. Sources include:

When you open an algae report photo, the app links to the image hosted by the reporting agency; images are not downloaded or stored by us.

Children

The app is not directed to children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will update the date above and post the revised version at this address.
